We had a dinner at the Royal Museum in Edinburgh and they gave us permission to take photographs, as long as no flash was allowed.
This item’s caption reads as follows:
BLACK SUN OF WINTER
This carved panel represents the part of the SDA Crafts Division collection which covered traditional Scottish applied arts. In addition to carving and lettering, this includes weaving, lave making, knitting, basketry, leather working, fishing tackle and vernacular furniture forms.
The artist was inspired by the Orkney landscape with its standing stones and burial cairns and the incised inscription is based on ancient “runic” script. Now a writer, he was formerly on the staff of Glasgow School of Art.
