The canopeum or umbrellino (umbrella) and tintinnabulum (bell) are symbols of a [papist] church’s rank as a basilica.
Originally, these were functional pieces. When the Pope arrived at a church for a liturgy, he was met at his carrriage with an umbrella to protect him from the elements. A procession formed behing him to the vesting area. The ringing of the bell announced the beginning of the Papal liturgy.
Seems to me there’s something wrong with someone so “holy” the rain can’t fall on him.
