Columbia 2 (1885)
Columbia Typewriter Co., New York, USA
“The first ‘visible typing’ machine.”
This machine was invented by Charles Spiro, a New York watchmaker. The Columbia gave proportional spacing: the carriage moved varying amounts to provide correct spacing for the characters. The typing could be viewed through the window.
