Edelmann (1899)
Wernicke Edelmann & Co. Germany
This will made index typewriter was a latecomer, as most of the typewriters being manufactured at this time were with keyboards. Nonethless, the Edelmann met with considerable success, and sold right up to just before the First World War [1914].
By moving the black wooden knob, back and forth, one selects the characters. The knob is then pushed down into the alignment gate, bringing the type-wheel down onto the roller to type.
The curved index strip is porcelain and over a hundred years later, still looks brand new.
