Printing Press
Ostrander Seymour Co.
c. 1870
Chicago
This type of printing press, known as a Washington iron hand press, was patented in 1829. Its distinguishing feature is the toggle action that allows for the printing of a page with a single pull of the handle. This type of press was used extensively in the nineteenth century to print newspapers. Two man working together could print 200 to 250 copies an hour.
